What to Look For in a DRaaS Vendor?

Contractual RTO/RPO

Ask whether recovery time and recovery point commitments appear in the SLA with enforceable service credits. Then request average MTTR data from their current client base. How a vendor responds to those two questions tells you more than any feature comparison.

Workload Coverage

VMware, Hyper-V, AWS, and Azure are the baseline. What matters is whether your actual environment is in scope — bare metal, IBM Power/i, legacy on-premises systems, and SaaS workloads. A vendor that handles 80% of your workloads and treats the rest as exceptions is a risk.

Documented Testing

A DR plan that lives in a document and has never been executed under real conditions is not a plan. Ask vendors for recovery test documentation: success rates, screenshot verification, and audit reports. If non-disruptive testing on demand requires an upgrade, that is a gap worth noting before you commit.

FAQs

What is the difference between backup and DRaaS?

Backup is data protection — creating recoverable copies of files, databases, and configurations. DRaaS is operational continuity — replicating your entire IT environment so systems, applications, and networks come back online quickly after a disruption. You can have backups without a DR plan. You cannot have a functional DR plan without backups. Vendors that conflate the two are selling you the former at the price of the latter.

How do I verify a DRaaS vendor's RTO/RPO claim before signing a contract?

Ask for the SLA document with specific RTO/RPO commitments and the service credit terms that apply if those commitments are missed. Then ask for documented recovery test results from real client environments, not theoretical benchmarks. Both are reasonable requests. A vendor that avoids either one is telling you something.

Is data in Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or Salesforce automatically protected?

No. SaaS platforms protect their own infrastructure, not your specific data. Native recovery tools have limited scope and short retention windows. If ransomware corrupts your SharePoint environment or a misconfigured sync overwrites critical files, native tools may not recover it. Third-party SaaS backup is a required layer in any complete DR strategy, not an optional add-on.

What DR deployment model is right for my organization?

Your RTO and RPO targets should determine the model and not the vendor's default recommendation. Backup and restore suits organizations that can tolerate several hours of downtime. Pilot light reduces RTO to minutes. Warm standby reduces it further. Multi-region active/active delivers near-zero RTO and RPO but carries the highest cost and operational complexity. Calculate your actual revenue exposure per hour of downtime first. That figure makes the decision straightforward.

Will DRaaS vendors know I am researching them?

On most review and comparison platforms, your browsing behavior is packaged as intent data and sold to vendors as leads. You are in their CRM before your evaluation has formally started.
